Invisalign is one of the most popular orthodontic treatments on the market, and while it moves teeth as effectively as braces do, it's radically different in the approach it uses to straighten teeth. At Heller Orthodontics, we're proud to help both adults and teenagers achieve new smiles through Invisalign treatment, but there's one question we often hear from patients interested in treatment: how do Invisalign aligners work? As your local Maryland orthodontist, we'd like to take some time to answer this question and explore how Invisalign works on a basic level.

How Invisalign Works

Invisalign does away with the brackets and wires. No metal or clear braces. Instead a different mechanism is used to move the teeth. Invisalign works by using clear, removable trays called aligners to straighten teeth. The aligners are made based on scans taken of the mouth and custom-manufactured to fit perfectly onto the dental arch – and it's the unique precision of the shaping process that lets them move teeth.

Looking at an Invisalign aligner, it's easy to see where each tooth fits into its mold. But the difference is that an Invisalign aligner isn't an exact model of the teeth: instead, the positioning of the mold of each tooth in the aligner is adjusted slightly towards a more ideal position. This means that the aligner fits the teeth close enough to be worn comfortably, but it places a subtle, finely-calibrated pressure on each tooth to gradually move it towards a new position. Wearing a pair of aligners for 1 to 2 weeks subtly shifts the position of the teeth enough that they're ready for another aligner. This continues, aligner after aligner, until the teeth are in completely new positions – and you've achieved a gorgeous new smile.
