Who doesn't love that refreshing feeling that comes from a swish of mouthwash? Using a mouthwash can be beneficial in many ways, and in today’s world there are several brands to choose from. Most brands claim that using a mouth rise can eliminate plaque and wash away bacteria. Read on as we explore the truths behind the claims.

While there are benefits associated with using mouthwash, one thing your Bethesda and Laurel orthodontist will certainly tell you is that mouthwash should never be used as a substitute for brushing or flossing. Here are a few tips about mouthwash that you may find helpful.

Choosing a Mouthwash That’s Right For You

If you choose to add mouthwash to your oral hygiene regimen, be sure to select one that has the American Dental Association or ADA Seal of Acceptance. This will ensure that the product you choose is safe and approved.

It's best to use a mouthwash that doesn't contain alcohol. The reason being that alcohol evaporates the saliva in your mouth, which protects your mouth from bad bacteria. In addition, a lack of moisture in your mouth is actually the main cause of bad breath.

The most popular mouthwash brands are Listerine, Colgate, Oral B, and Scope. It’s wise to select a mouthwash that meets your needs and has a preferred flavor to encourage use. If you're cavity-prone or don't get enough fluoride in your drinking water, use a mouthwash that has fluoride to strengthen tooth enamel. Dr. Heller recommends Phos-Flur fluoride rinse for all patients wearing braces.

For those with gingivitis or gum disease, use an antibacterial mouthwash such as Listerine Antiseptic Mouthwash. Antibacterial mouthwash will help lessen the levels of harmful bacteria in your mouth. Use your fluoride rinse and your antibacterial mouthwash at different times for best effect.

The Right Way To Use Mouthwash

In order for mouthwash to work well, take the recommended dose displayed on the packaging and hold the mouthwash in your mouth for at least 30 seconds while swishing it around and gargling it at the back of your throat. Do not rinse, eat or drink for 30 minutes following use of mouthwash or Phos- Flur.
