What Makes a Good Candidate for Invisalign?

While traditional metal braces are still the most popular form of treatment we offer, Invisalign is quickly becoming one of the most well-known treatments on the market - and with little wonder. The aligners are clear and virtually invisible when worn so no one will know you're straightening your teeth, and it's easy to pop them in and out to eat, drink, brush, or floss, so you can still enjoy all your favorite foods and maintaining oral hygiene is a breeze. But Invisalign isn't for everyone. So just what exactly makes a good candidate for Invisalign?

Dedication & Discipline

While Invisalign is an extremely convenient and discrete form of treatment, it does come with some drawbacks. Having the ability to remove the aligners is a big plus, but it also makes it possible and often times, all too easy to wear them less than the recommended 20-22 hours a day. This may seem like a small issue, but not wearing the aligners long enough every day can slow down treatment and necessitate more appointments, so it's critical that anyone receiving Invisalign treatment be dedicated and disciplined to wear the aligners 22 hours every day.

Healthy, Strong Teeth

As with any orthodontic treatment, we can only move teeth if they're healthy - so anyone with existing tooth decay, cavities, or gum disease will need to have those issues completely cleared up before proceeding with Invisalign. It's also imperative to have strong, consistent oral hygiene habits, as during treatment you'll need to brush your teeth 4-6 times per day.

Mild to Moderate Malocclusions

Invisalign technology has advanced by leaps and bounds in recent years, but there are still some cases where traditional braces are more effective. If alignment problems in the teeth are too severe or there are serious issues in the alignment of the jaws, we may need to use braces, as they allow us to utilize elastics that can move the jaws quickly and effectively.
