October is National Orthodontic Health Month

October is National Orthodontic Health Month
Posted on 09/26/2016

While most people are excited that Halloween is this month, the team at Heller Orthodontics is busy celebrating National Orthodontic Health Month! Sponsored by the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), Orthodontic Health Month is designated to bring awareness to the importance of oral health. This is also the time of year where the hard work and dedication of orthodontists and dentists throughout the nation are recognized.

Orthodontic health begins with the single most important thing you can do for your oral health, proper brushing and flossing. You should brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day. If you’d like to go even further it is best to brush after every meal if you can. Brushing and flossing regularly prevents plaque and tartar build up, keeping your teeth and gums nice and strong. During this month we encourage you to go the extra mile and make oral hygiene your top priority.

Resist The Temptation Of Halloween Candy

Over 600 million pounds of candy is purchased in October alone. While these sugary treats might taste good they can hurt your oral health and could pose a threat to your braces. Sticky, gooey candies can damage brackets and cause bacteria to wear away your teeth’s enamel, but there are tasty alternatives to Halloween candy. Here are some of our favorites:

- Smoothies
- Frozen and regular yogurt
- Chex mix
- Dark Chocolate-dipped soft fruit like clementines, apricots & mango
- Jell-o
