Heller Orthodontics Celebrates

Every year, the American Association of Orthodontics recognizes October as National Orthodontic Health Month. While most of the country's kids are gearing up for Halloween and the steady influx of sugary, sticky candy, we at Heller Orthodontics want to remind our patients of the importance of avoiding treats that could damage their braces or appliances. As your Laurel & Bethesda orthodontist, we want to celebrate this month by raising awareness of the importance of good oral health year round.

Treats to Avoid

You don't have to skip out on the Halloween celebrations just because you have braces. We want our patients to have fun as much as possible, but to do so in a way that will keep their orthodontics intact. This October, try to avoid eating the following treats or candy:

  • Caramel
  • Taffy
  • Candy apples
  • Popcorn
  • Licorice

These hard, crunchy, chewy, or sticky treats can break brackets or damage wires, requiring an extra trip to our Bethesda or Laurel office for orthodontic repair.

Treats to Enjoy

There are plenty of other sweets that you can eat—in moderation—this Halloween, including the following:

  • Soft chocolates
  • Peanut butter cups
  • Apple cider
  • Ice cream

If you do consume treats, remember to brush and floss as soon as possible to avoid tooth decay and cavities. If you have any questions regarding your braces or your orthodontic health in general, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We look forward to celebrating your health! And remember, every day is great day to celebrate your good health!
