When you’re looking for a Laurel and Bethesda orthodontist, we at Heller Orthodontics strive to be your premier choice. With our wide variety of orthodontic treatments, from Invisalign to braces, we’re sure to have just the right treatment that’ll help you get the smile of your dreams. If you happen to be wearing braces though, you’ll quickly realize that there are foods that you can’t eat during this treatment. While this is unfortunate, we’d like to make your time a little easier and give you some tips on foods you can and can’t eat while you’re wearing braces.

Avoid Hard and Sticky Foods

This one is a definite no! Hard foods can potentially break your brackets and wires while sticky foods can sometimes get stuck in your braces, loosening or even pulling them apart. You’ll need to stay away from these foods as long as you’re wearing braces.

Try to Skip the Sweets

While you don’t have to completely eliminate sugary foods from your diet, it’s best to only eat sweets in moderation. Sugary foods will normally cause tooth decay, but it’s even worse for a patient with braces. Since braces offer many nooks and crannies for food particles to get trapped in, sugar can easily get stuck in your braces and cause your tooth enamel to erode.

Eat Fruit Instead

While it might seem like you’re missing out on so many foods when you have braces, we’d like to let you know that there are still delicious foods that you can eat! We personally recommend eating fruit. They’ll keep your gums and teeth healthy and they’re high in vitamins A and C.

Cheese Is a Great Choice

Cheese is an excellent choice for a braces-friendly treat for many reasons. First, it contains calcium that will help rebuild tooth enamel. Also, it will help your mouth produce saliva, which is great for killing bacteria and washing your mouth of food particles. Finally, cheese is effective at neutralizing the acid levels in your mouth.

Lastly, Make Sure to Drink Water

Water isn’t only healthy for your body – it’s great for your mouth as well. Drinking plenty of water will help you in a variety of different ways, from keeping your mouth clean, preventing bad breath, fighting cavities, and neutralizing acids in your mouth.
