Your Shamy appliance is to be worn FULL TIME.
This will allow your teeth to move into position rapidly. The Shamy appliance will move your molars into their ideal positions. The appliance works best when your teeth are in function (working). Full time means that you will be wearing the Shamy appliance 24 hours a day, except for the following times:
- While eating.
- While brushing and flossing your teeth.
- When swimming in an open body of water. This means the ocean, a lake or a river.
- You can wear the Shamy in a swimming pool, since it is easily retrieved if it should fall out of your mouth.
Whenever possible you should brush your Shamy appliance and your teeth after eating. If you
cannot brush after each meal, rinse out your mouth and rinse off your Shamy appliance at a sink or water fountain. Make sure that you rinse your mouth out after you eat ANYTHING! Food left between our Shamy
appliance and your gums will cause an infection to start. You do not have to brush your Shamy appliance after you have eaten, but you must rinse it off and rinse your mouth out each time.
You will
also notice that initially your speech will be different. This is very temporary and easily corrected. All you need to do is read aloud, very slowly. Enunciate every word in an exaggerated
fashion and in a short period of time your tongue will adapt to a new position while you are speaking. The new position will be a subtle change, but one that will cause your speech pattern to return to its old
self.
After three to six months of full time wear you will be given a retainer to wear. You will be wearing both your Shamy appliance and your retainer on a full time basis and therefore we will not be
providing you with a case for them. Your mouth will act as a case for both the Shamy appliance and the retainer that will follow shortly.
