Positioner

A positioner looks like a rubber mouth guard; the kind of mouth guard that a football player would wear.   The positioner is made of a synthetic material which will reposition your teeth into their final positions based on a prescription that Dr. Heller has supplied to our laboratory.  The positioner is to be stored dry in the case that comes with it.  Please keep your positioner clean!!!  By brushing it daily and soaking it once a week in Efferdent, it will work well, taste good and last for many years.  Please store your positioner in a secure place so that your dog will not get to it.  The positioner is soft, chewy and smells like you.  DOGS LOVE TO CHEW POSITIONERS AND THEY ARE VERY EXPENSIVE TO REPLACE!!!

The positioner will prohibit you from speaking while you are actually wearing it.  There is no reason why you should need to wear it outside of your home and therefore your positioner should not cause you any embarrassment.  We suggest that if you must communicate while wearing your positioner, that you write messages down for family members and friends to read.  Speaking while wearing your positioner will not permit your teeth to settle into their proper positions.

The positioner is to be worn according to the following schedule.  Please do not deviate from this schedule without direct instructions from Dr. Heller.  The first few weeks you will wear your positioner for four hours a day plus all night.  You may break up these four hours into forty-five minute segments if you wish.  Any times less than forty-five minutes will not count toward the needed four hours of daytime wear.

After this initial period, you will be asked to wear your positioner for three hours a day plus all night. Again, the daytime hours do not need to be consecutive and they may be broken down into forty-five minute segments. This period of wear will last for six weeks.

After this period of time, you will be asked to wear your positioner for two hours a day plus all night.  Again, the daytime hours do not need to be consecutive and they may be broken down into forty-five minute segments. This period of wear will last for eight weeks.

After this period of time, you will be asked to wear your positioner for one hour a day plus all night.  This period of wear will last for eight weeks.

Finally, you will be asked to wear your positioner only at night.
